The wonderful day I had today started bright and early at 5:30 AM.  The WJMC crew went over to the George Mason Campus located in Arlington, Virginia for the taping of C-Span.  This was my first experience ever being a part of a live audience and it was awesome!  I loved watching the camera men communicate and the person who navigated the sound board.

I did enjoy hearing the speakers though.  I thought Tucker Carlson was hilarious!  He came off as a jerk, but I think he did have many good points.  Afterwards it was very interesting to discuss the issues and some bold ideas he had covered.  My friends and I had different outlooks so it was fun to discuss it!

At this point, I know I’ll take a lot away from this conference.

This conference has already taught me many ways to excel in whatever I choose later in life.  I’ve learned about how to “network” myself in order to find jobs or get promotions.  However, I’ve learned a lot about journalism itself.  I thought the speaker, Chris Cilliza, was very entertaining.  He definitely passed on some useful information that I hope to utilize later on in life.

Cilliza mentioned some of the thoughts I often worry about before I publish any type of work.  He said that you shouldn’t worry that others won’t connect with what you publish.  Others will be drawn to your work if you show you are passionate about it.  If you can show you love what you do and want to share it with others, viewers will sense that.  He also said that you shouldn’t be afraid to fail.  In order to grow in a profession, you must take risks.  It’s possible that it may be rejected by society or your company, but it also has the potential to be influential to someone or truly be a hit!

I’m excited to visit the Newseum tomorrow and spend the whole day learning!
